The first ever British general election TV leadership debate sparked a storm of interest, with almost 10 million viewers tuning in, and a surge of support for the leader of the Liberal Democrats who were formerly running third in the polls.

What are the major lessons to be learned from this first debate? What is likely to change as a result of such debates in future?
