What is to be done about London's growing gang and knife crime problem?
An Independent on Sunday investigation suggested that almost 14,000 people a year are injured in knife attacks. Some authorities believe the number may be much higher, because many people do not report their injuries for fear of reprisals.
Mal Fletcher, social commentator and director of Next Wave International, was interviewed on this hot issue today by England's UCB Radio.
Commenting on the Paul Hammond show 'Midweek Matters', Mal said that a major contributing factor in the problem of youth violence is lack of government support for the traditional family unit.
He also spoke about the media's responsibility to reduce the depictions of violence on TV and in movies.
'Media producers and film-makers have long argue that, when they depict violence, they don't create the problem, they simply reflect what goes on in society,' he said.
'But I wonder how often you can reflect something before you start reinforcing it - especially in the pliable minds of children.'
