Remembering the Good Times

29 March 2024

Esther 9:20-22 'Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent letters to all the Jews throughout the provinces of King Xerxes, near and far, to have them celebrate annually the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar as the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration.' (NIV)

There's a great lesson running all the way through the Bible story: God's people should never forget the way he has delivered them. As Christians, we should continue to bring to mind the specific ways in which he has come to our rescue. We should make a habit of recalling specific instances where he has turned our enemies around, or brought down situations that were threatening to overpower us. Sometimes it is worth setting aside a particular time to celebrate the breakthroughs God has given us. Taking time to remember the victories God brings us keeps us reliant on him and humble in our attitude to our own good fortune. What's more, we should share those experiences with the next generation – particularly our own children, if we have any. Each new generation starts life with a blank slate. Young people have to make their own choices and learn their own lessons. But every generation can get a head start, a boost up the ladder of effective living, if the one before it is willing to share lessons already learned. So many younger people these days spend too much time learning lessons the hard way; lessons their elders could have helped them avoid simply by passing on experience. Making a regular discipline of recalling God's goodness to us not only helps us to keep a sense of hope for our own lives, it also helps our children to build on what we have learned.

Prayer: 'Lord, I want to remember and thank you for every great thing you've done in my life. I also want to pass on my victories to the next generation, so that they can build on the legacy of your goodness.'
