Staying On Track

28 March 2024

1 Samuel 2:35 '[God said]: "I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always."'

When Samuel was called to take on the role of a prophet, he knew that God had made a great promise about him; that he would have a strong, firm position in Israel. I'm sure there were times in the ministry of Samuel when he just wanted to throw in the towel; to leave the 'prophet business' and go grow potatoes somewhere. He presided over the installation of Israel's first king and watched with sorrow as Saul blew his massive opportunities to create a great legacy in and for Israel. I'm just as certain, though, that on his bleakest days Samuel reminded himself of that promise given to him in his youth. It was the promise that carried him through the tough times. His focus went beyond present realities to future possibilities, all because he knew he'd been promised the ultimate victory. Sometimes, you've just got to shut your eyes and ears to the circumstance around you and conjure up that promise picture again. It will keep you on track when all around you are losing their grip.

Prayer: 'Lord, help me to do what Samuel did: to remember the promises you've made to me and to stand on them even if others are falling around me!'
